It is shown that the ambiguity which appears ih the evolution of spacetimes with colliding waves arises from an incomplete physical treatment of the problem in which only the gravitational field is considered. For several representative cases, it is shown that the ambiguity disappears completely when the underlying physical equations for the matter content are taken into consideration. It is also argued that the transformation of colliding null dusts into other forms of matter is unrealizable.
