Sufficiently high pressures can be achieved in the laboratory thatthe electronic states of matter are significantly altered, resultingin novel properties for materials. Pressures of this magnitude arereached inside planets, such that the evolution of planetary interiorsis controlled by material properties unlike those found at ambientconditions. Future work, at near-stellar conditions, opens thepossibility for studying entirely new phenomena in condensed-matterphysics.
