It is suggested that heating of the neutral atmosphere at the level of the mesopause (about 80 km) can be produced by sufficiently large ionospheric electric fields (with dissipation of ionospheric currents as the mechanism) as well as by auroral particle precipitation. Both heating mechanisms are shown to reduce or prevent the formation of noctilucent clouds at this height. Since ionospheric electric field strength depends on the position of the earth within an interplanetary sector, it follows that the interplanetary sector structure affects the temperature of the neutral atmosphere down to at least the mesopause level.
