We detected extended radio continuum emission around 16 UCHII regions, whic h have large ratios of single-dish to VLA fluxes, and observed radio recombination lines towards all the sources. The extended emission consists of one to several compact (~ 1') components and a diffuse extended (2'-12') envelope. The UC HII regions are usually located in the compact components, where the UC HII regions always correspond to their peaks. Our observations strongly suggest that the ultracompact, compact, and extended components are physically associated in the individual sources and that the UC HII regions and their associated compact components are excited by the same ionizing sources. Therefore, almost all the observed UC HII regions are unlikely to be bona-fide UC HII regions. We consider the origin of the extended emission and discuss its implications on the age problem of UC HII regions.
