Bromine, Elements: Volatile, Interplanetary Dust Particles

Scientific paper

Bromine concentrations exceeding 100 times the CI meteorite value have been measured in interplanetary dust particles collected from the Earth's stratosphere. Because of the high halogen content and the long duration of particle residence in the stratosphere, Br contamination is possible. Six large interplanetary dust particles were analyzed using the Synchrotron X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe at the National Synchrotron Light Source. Each particle was exposed to the x-ray beam for a continuous 4 to 16 hour period. An approximately exponential decay of the Br content with time, over a 2-hour period, was observed. Since the particles are estimated to be heated to <100 degrees C during these analyses, this easily mobilized Br is likely to be a contaminant. In all cases the Br concentration stabilized at a value which exceeded the CI meteorite value. No loss of S, Cl, K, Cu, Zn, or Ge was observed, indicating that these elements are more strongly bound.
