Earth Mesosphere: Dynamics

Scientific paper

In August 1989, a strong polar cap absorption event allowed extended measurements of both horizontal and vertical wind components in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere by means of the EISCAT UHF radar. A distance (130 km) away from the radar site, a Na lidar instrument simultaneously measured temperature profiles over several hours in the altitude range of 85-100 km. This combination of measurements gives detailed information about the behaviour of the polar mesopause region in the transition period from boreal summer to autumn conditions.
