Solar radiation normally incident on an oxygen atmosphere is considered in a calculation of the rates of dissociation of molecular oxygen and of ozone. The variation in total rate with altitude and the contributions made by radiation of different spectral regions are determined. The results also illustrate the dependence on altitude of the wavelength distribution of these contributions to the total rate. This effect is related to the cross-sections and the assumed vertical distributions of both absorbing constituents; also to some extent to the distribution of incident radiation.
