After the announcement on 7 August 1996 by NASA officials that traces of fossil microbes have been detected in meteorite ALH84001, a symposium was held on 29 August 1996, at Boulder, Colorado, where scholars from a range of disciplines discussed the evidence for life on Mars and its implications. This special issue presents articles based on several of the talks given at that symposium. These papers include: 1. The thrill of the search - finding ALH84001 (R. Score). 2. Uncovering Martians hidden among us - the source of ALH84001 (D. W. Mittlefehldt). 3. Laying out the evidence - the case for life on Mars (B. Jakosky). 4. Is the case persuasive? A skeptical view (M. Yarus).
