We derive the equations of relativistic homologous collapse for spherical symmetry and solve it to establish the relationship between the softness of the nuclear equation of state and the initial shock strength of type-II supernovae. We present a semi-analytical model for shock formation which can be used to study the subsequent shock propagation. We compare our results with those obtained from numerical simulations. So far such an attempt has not been made in terms of a simple analytical model for shock formation.
