Small magnetic particles have played, and continue to play, a significant role in many areas of planetary science (geonomy, to use the terminology of Jack Jacobs (Jacobs, 1974), to whom this volume is dedicated). In many cases, energy considerations predict critical sizes less than the wavelength of visible light. This has made such grains difficult to find in rocks, and even more difficult to identify chemically. Here, we trace the efforts that have been made over the last three decades to overcome these difficulties.
