As an introduction to the solar component of the present session on acceleration and heating processes in solar system plasmas, the basic properties of the solar atmosphere are described, and the mechanisms are outlined which may operate to produce the solar wind, to heat the corona, and to drive the transient events which are observed, such as flares and coronal mass ejections. The aim of this review is to provide a useful perspective for the solar physicist as well as an introduction for those not familiar with the sun.
