The accuracy of determination of RR Lyrae masses from observed period ratios is studied with a view toward recent controversies about physical properties of globular cluster stars. It is shown that the application of one standard calibration diagram of constant mass curves is insufficient to take changes in metal content between Oosterhoff I and II clusters and possible luminosity differences into account. It is concluded that correct application of period ratios is more complicated than generally assumed at present. In due time observed period ratios will provide a sensitive test of horizontal branch models.
