Design for cameras and spectrographs which will work in the 1 to 35 μm wavelength region exist and instruments will be in use on 4 m telescopes by the time the Keck Telescope, the first VLT, is in use. The designs developed at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh are suitable for single aperture telescopes in the 6 to 16 m range and can be used at Cassegrain, bent Cassegrain and Naysmith foci. Incorporation of adaptive optics is seen as being essential. Total system designs allow for adaptive optics and for other realtime methods for correcting for phase and background fluctuations.
