Spectrographs: Focal Reducers
Scientific paper
The F/2.5 focal reducer lens and multi-object spectrograph of the European Southern Observatory 3.6-metre telescope was adapted to the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). A longer backfocus was required for use with the available dewar. The design incorporates an 8-position filter wheel at the Cassegrain focus and an 8 position grism wheel at the pupil. Both wheels are mounted in detachable "cassettes" and the drive, encoding and position indexing mechanism reside with the focal reducer structure.
