Scientific paper
This article outlines the evolution of dome design concepts during the past years. Typical examples show that progress in telescopes domes has not been the result of advancing technology but rather the consequence of a more realistic appraisal of requirements. Some important aspects in the specification of domes, such as aerodynamics behaviour and height from the ground, are discussed. Then the design approach and the present concept for the VLT enclosure are described.
