Mirrors: Support Systems
Scientific paper
There are three current lines of development for large mirrors and supports in future telescopes: rigid lightweight monolithic mirrors, segmented mirrors, flexible thin meniscus monolithic mirrors. The ESO NTT and VLT projects use the thin meniscus technology. The impact of the NTT on the future development of this technology is analysed. Active and passive technologies are compared, the scope of active technology defined and the advantages of active optics for future thin monoliths considered.
