By using ideas of qualitative dynamical systems theory we study someaspects of inhomogeneous gravitational fields near the cosmologicalsingularity in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. Assuming that thesynchronous frame can be extended back to singularity we show thatthere is a region in phase space where Kasner initial conditions areadmissible. Consequently whenever the metric tensor visits such regionnear the singularity it will be close to a generalized Kasneruniverse. Possible consequences of this study in the description ofthe behaviour of Einstein's equations near the singularity are discussed.
