The evolution of the hollow beam distribution of energetic electrons giving rise to ECM instability is investigated and the spatial dispersion term is included in the equation of wave energy. The instability causes the growth of wave energy, while the propagation of waves evacuates the electromagnetic energy from the source region. By analysing these two effects spike-like time profiles of waves are obtained. It is found that the saturation time ts of ECM emission and the duration of spikes increase with the decrease of the frequency of solar radio spike emission. The approximate expressions of ts and of the peak wave energy density are derived.
