Observations of supernova 1978A are examined. A burst of neutrino events was detected by the Kamiokande II proton-decay detector located in Kamioka, Japan on March 2, 1987. The shock wave eruption processes and the Kamioka data are described. The difficulties encountered in classifying the supernova due to its contradictory characteristics are discussed.
