A Doppler shift method of measuring the ion-neutral collision frequency is presented which is based on measurements of the electric field and the ion velocity in the absence of a neutral wind. Relationships between the vertical ion motion and the electric field are demonstrated using results of EISCAT radar measurements. Under favorable conditions the method is shown to give a determination of the collision frequency up to 130 km altitude. It is suggested that the limitation of the technique to conditions of negligible neutral wind can be overcome by the use of at least two transmitter beam directions.
