The full GEMS (Group Evolution Multi-wavelength Study) sample includes 60 galaxy groups, chosen from 10 optical catalogues, the majority with recession velocities between 1000 and 3000km/s and with a ROSAT PSPC (position sensitive proportional counter) exposure time of more than 10000s within 20-arcmin of the group position.
We chose 16 groups that were near or south of declination 0°, for wide-field HI imaging at Parkes. The groups selected for HI observations have a variety of X-ray properties, from just the central galaxy being detected (six groups), to diffuse group-scale X-ray emission (eight groups), to no X-ray detection at all (two groups).
