Preliminary results are presented from an experiment to measure the upper flux of horizontal momentum per unit mass associated with gravity waves and turbulence near the summer polar mesospause, using a mobile VHF (53.5 MHz) radar on the island of Andoya in northern Norway. When averaged over a period of about 3 hours, the magnitudes of this upward flux are found to reach a maximum value of 66 m sq/sec sq, near the peak of the polar-mesopause summer echo (PSME). It is suggested that the PMSE exhibits substantial aspect sensitivity.
