It is established that variations of mean-annual values of global geomagnetic disturbances are not due to variations of the sunspot-formation level in the photosphere. A close correlation is suggested between geomagnetic disturbances and the solar quasi-dipole magnetic field. The main periods of variations of the time series of geomagnetic activity (aa indices) are identified and classified.
