The paper discusses Bok globules, interstellar dust clouds that are compact, fairly opaque, isolated, and regular in form. Evidence is reviewed which suggests that the globules are collapsing, which may be a step in an uncommon way of star formation. Radio astronomical data indicate that Bok globules possess characteristics that would lead to gravitational collapse unless a countervailing force were operating. Thermal and rotational effects can be discounted, while analysis is offered to show that magnetic effects and turbulence are probably not of a significant magnitude to prevent gravitational collapse. Attempts to discover new stars associated with Bok globules are reported.
