The possibility that proton precipitation is responsible for the sharp decrease in gas pressure outside the plasmapause is considered. A formula is derived which relates a certain magnitude to the distance to the plasmasphere measured in earth radii. The effects of several factors (increased flow of cold plasma from the ionosphere, increased density of the cold plasma on the internal side of the plasmapause, and increased flow of precipitating protons) on the magnitude and distance parameters are examined.
