A balloon-borne stellar photometer was launched on Oct. 14, 1972, from the French base located at Aire-sur-l'Adour, reaching an altitude of 35 km. A reduction of the ozone thickness was detected at sunrise. It is believed that this phenomenon can be explained by the fact that each point of the line of sight receives sequentially the different wavelengths of the solar spectrum, red light coming first and UV last. Therefore, the photodissociation of molecular oxygen takes place after the end of the measurement. Furthermore, the cycle of destruction of ozone by nitrogen oxides takes place in the presence of the nighttime concentration of NO2, which can be estimated by this method.
