In stellar collapse and neutron stars, matter reaches densities as high as an order of magnitude greater than that of nuclear matter. A review is given of the properties of nuclei in matter at sub-nuclear densities, a subject of importance for stellar collapse. Particular emphasis is placed on some of the very aspherical shapes nuclei can adopt. The properties of Skyrme's chiral soliton model at high densities, and the implications of the model for neutron stars and nuclear forces are discussed.
