The status of the data base on the stratospheric budgets of O3, CH4, NO, and odd nitrogen is discussed in terms of kinetic and photochemical parameters. Attention is given to the in situ source reaction between N2O and O(D-1) that yields 2NO as measured remotely by the SAMS satellite. Estimates are provided of the 2NO production rate as determined by several investigators, and the effects on the troposphere of odd nitrogen species produced in the stratosphere are examined. The global odd nitrogen production rate is projected to be 0.55 Tg/yr, and correction factors which can reconcile the production rates projected by previous investigators are indicated. Consideration is also directed toward CH4 reactions with stratospheric OH and Cl, and to odd oxygen species production. Finally, stratospheric photochemical reactions involving sulfur compounds are investigated, with note taken of volcanic contributions to stratospheric constituents.
