A large sunspot group observed in October 1972 is analyzed for morphological characteristics. The main morphological feature of the relevant proton active region is shown to be the clockwise spiral structure of the penumbral filaments of the large leading sunspot, designated 'A'. The formation of this spiral structure and the observed counterclockwise rotation of the sunspot group's N-S magnetic axis are discussed and correlated with the counterclockwise rotation of the umbra of sunspot A. It is noted that the direction of both rotations was opposite to that of the solar differential rotation.
