Results obtained by Bazilevskaia et al. (1983) are interpreted in the framework of a model of twisted toroidal-magnetic-field ropes emerging at the surface from the convective region of the sun. It is shown that the solar cycle is determined by large-scale regular motions of plasma and of associated fields. It is suggested that these motions are mechanical global oscillations of the sun whose velocity field has toroidal (torsional) and poloidal (radial and meridional) components.
