A possible nondynamo mechanism for the generation of solar magnetic fields is examined: namely, the model of the so-called battery current which arises in rotating stars due to the nonparallelism of the electron pressure gradient to the electron density gradient. It is noted that efforts to explain the generation of surface solar fields by the battery effect have been fruitless, as the lifetime of photospheric temperature irregularities is very short. However, it is argued that, since the observed fields are the result of complex processes inside the convective zone (possibly on its bottom), the lifetime of magnetic flux tubes on the bottom of this zone can be very large, which removes the basic difficulty of the battery mechanism.
