Scientific paper

The methods of global geomagnetic sounding and the results obtained by these techniques are examined. The principles and limitations of modelling methods, exact inversion methods, and heuristic (Backus-Gilbert) methods are discussed. The evolution of our picture of the earth's overall radial electrical conductivity distribution with successive improvements in data and mathematical techniques is described. The prospects for improving this picture are also discussed. Address from 7 January 1973: Physics Department, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont., Canada.
