Scientific paper

The author considers certain papers whose authors attempt to cast doubt either on the physical theory of meteors as a whole or on its individual propositions. He analyzes the following problems: the appearance of radiation from the shock-compressed layer ahead of a large meteoroid and its quantitative relationship to the emission from meteor vapor; the emission efficiency coefficient T in the case of bright bolides; the applicability of the photometric method of determining the initial masses of meteoroids and large bodies; allowance for the fragmenting of meteoroids. He shows (on the basis both of an analysis of observations and of theoretical considerations) that emission from the shock provides 5 - 20% of the emission from meteor vapor. He reveals certain errors in the interpretation of observations and in the initial assumptions of the papers being critiqued. He demonstrates the complete applicability of the concept of the emission efficiency coefficient and of the photometric method of determining initial masses for large bodies. The author notes that neglect of the fragmenting of meteoroids in flight can, in the application of the dynamical method of determining masses, lead to fictitious results.
