Observations are presented of the F-region troughs observed in the daytime ionosphere near L = 4 using gorund-based (differential-Doppler) measurements. It is suggested that these features are of the same character as those seen by Tulunay and Grebowsky (1978) and possibly Brace et al. (1974) using in situ satellite observations of electron density. It is argued that these events are the ionospheric manifestation of large poleward electric fields or rapid subauroral ion drift events. These results indicate that during some magnetic storms, plasma sheet ions are driven closer to the earth than plasma sheet electrons (partial ring current) creating a polewards directed electric field when mapped along magnetic field lines into the ionosphere.
