The anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) method used in the investigation reported has the merit that chemical changes in the studied material due to heating are avoided. The new method can, thus, be used in cases in which an employment of the conventional method is not feasible. The characteristics of ARM are considered along with details regarding the experimental technique used in the new method. The new approach was used in the study of lunar samples. The results show that the natural remanent magnetization of the samples which are suitable for paleofield determinations is carried by iron grains with multidomain characteristics.
