Monte Carlo simulations of the 3.8 m CANGAROO I imaging atmospheric Čerenkov /γ-ray telescope using the mocca 92 airshower simulation code of A.M. Hillas are presented. They are used to investigate the performance of the telescope and camera after the recoating of the mirror in 1996. We have determined the /γ-ray energy thresholds and image cuts at zenith angles of 25/° and 55/°. The cuts are used to enhance the selection of photons versus cosmic rays in the analysis of data on the Vela and Crab plerions in paper II. The /γ-ray modal energy thresholds are /~2.7 and /~12 TeV respectively.
