Preliminary results are reported for a spectroscopic survey of late M type giants near the optical center of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The survey was conducted using an objective prism attached to a Schmidt telescope and was limited to stars of class M6.5 and later, which show an apparent drop in the intensity of the continuum at wavelengths longer than 8400 A due to blending of TiO and VO bands. Eight hundred three such stars were found, and it is noted that their surface distribution suggest a symmetrical concentration about the center of an area where 120 late M stars per sq deg are located. Apparent magnitudes obtained for 228 of the stars suggest that the stars found in this survey may be similar to those of classes M6 III and M7 III in the solar neighborhood. The results indicate that the LMC may have M giants contributing to the disk population.
