Scientific paper

The paper considers the possibility of exploiting the phenomenon of the trapping of radiation in the interlayer ionospheric duct as it is scattered on inhomogeneities created by the nonlinear effect of powerful radiowaves on the ionosphere, as a means of injecting energy into the ionosphere from earth or of extracting energy from the ionosphere. Scattering takes place on extended inhomogeneities (1 m to 1 km in diameter and over 10 km in length) oriented along the earth's magnetic field. A study of the geometry of scattering and the mirror scattering cone yields some information on the conditions under which round-the-world signal propagation might be realized through this phenomenon.
