The prelaunch planning and subsequent analysis of tracking operations during the Viking 1 launch phase were described. The launch phase tracking procedures were intensively considered and conservatively designed to accommodate even the most unfavorable of launch possibilities. These procedures were successfully implemented and strongly contributed to the highly successful launch of Viking 1.
