Data on the Martian surface are reviewed and illustrated with Viking Orbiter pictures. Various surface temperatures are discussed, including densely cratered terrains; chaotic, fretted, and knobby terrains; sparsely cratered plains; volcanic features; and channels. Tectonic features, Valles Marineris, impact craters, polar regions, and aeolian features are also discussed. It is shown that Mars is asymmetric in its topography, distribution of surface features, and physiography. Physiographic differences are discussed together with some hypotheses proposed to explain the differences.
