Current research on the detection of nucleon decays as a measurement of their stability and the eventual upper limit to the lifetime of protons and neutrons in the universe is discussed. The development of grand unified field theories is presented as motivation for the experimental measurement of baryon decay, and planned experiments to detect the products of nucleon decay under water, inside mines and below mountains are outlined. Implications of the potential results of these experiments for the early state of the universe and different grand unified theories are also considered.
