The paper reviews deviations from the standard stellar abundances, including local and temporal variations in the Galaxy. Attention is given to abundance peculiarities due to the effects of evolution and of peculiar and metallic-line stars. In addition, the following population effects are considered: the helium abundance, the general enrichment of the interstellar medium in metals, and the problem of the old super-metal-rich stars found by Spinrad and Taylor (1969) both outside and in galactic clusters. Recent observational results are also discussed, including those of galactic disks and halos.
