The chemical composition of the interstellar medium (IM) is discussed. Attention is given to the small-scale structure of the IM as investigated by McKee and Ostriker (1978), and to the pattern of depletion in the IM. The determination of the chemical abundances in planetary nebulae and the H II regions is outlined, considering the O/H, N/O, and He/H abundance ratios found by Peimbert and Serrano (1979). The derivation of the abundances in the low ionization regions located mostly in the inner arms of spiral galaxies is also discussed, and emphasis is placed on the presentation by Stasinska (1979) of a new set of model computations of emission line intensities in extragalactic H II regions, using a variable density model. The determination of the chemical composition of the IM from the study of SNRs is considered, along with the study of shock ionized gas.
