The author formulates and analyzes a number of theoretical and experimental problems involving free convection. The problems are (1) a horizontal layer of fluid heated uniformly from below, (2) rectangular cavities with lateral heating, (3) double diffusive convection, (4) convection in a porous slab, and (5) some problems related to convection in the earth's mantle, convection in oceans, and convection in stellar atmospheres. The work constitutes a critical review of these problems, and a large bibliography is provided.
