Review of theoretical research on the evolution of red giants, and comparison of models. The nucleosynthesis of s-process elements (Sr, Zr, Tc, Ba) and composition anomalies implying ongoing nucleosynthesis deep in the interior of red giants is discussed, with FG Sagittae as illustrative example. Active phases and relaxation cycles in the evolution of red giants, with vigorous fluctuations in He burning rate, thermal instability conditions, interaction between the He burning shell, the hydrogen burning shell, and the intervening convective zone, internal mixing, the helium shell flash, and s-process (slow process) synthesis and mixing are discussed. Maximum outward and inward penetration of convection is singled out as a crucial problem. Present descriptions of s-process synthesis are more successful for stars of greater mass than for low-mass stars.
