Making use of the latest available ion-chemical reactions and their rate constants, the positive and negative ion density profiles have been derived. Several λ-profiles have been derived and the importance of the λ-profile in lowering the effective recombination coefficient has been highlighted. The photoionization rates of the various neutral constituents, O, O2, N2, NO, O2(1Δg) under quiet, M3 flare, X4 flare and the outstanding flares have been studied quantitatively in various discrete wavelength bands of XUV solar spectra. The importance of solar X-rays below 8 Å ionizing O, O2 and N2 has been quantified and it overtakes the ionization of NO by H-Lyman α. The ψ-profiles have been derived under different flare conditions by a new technique. Electron density profiles derived under different solar conditions are compared with the IRI model and the experimental profiles.
