Consideration is given to the anomalous splitting of the spectrum of the earth's free oscillations. The splitting is larger than predicted by the rotation and ellipticity. The explanation of the splitting proposed by Woodhouse et al. (1986), based on anisotropy in the inner core, is reviewed. An alternative interpretation is proposed in terms of the rigidity in the outer core.
