Implications of recent measurements of the gamma-ray flux from the region of the galactic center are examined with particular reference to the 300-pc gas ring. Evidence for an increase in cosmic-ray intensity near the galactic center is discussed. Calculations are performed to determine the factor by which the intensities of cosmic-ray protons and electrons in the 300-pc gas ring are enhanced.
