Aurorae: Morphology

Scientific paper

The structure and dynamics of the precipitation region leading to the formation of pulsating polar aurorae are examined in data from the Heiss Island Observatory. It is shown, in the period of recording auroral pulsations in the day sector, that a "gap in the luminosity intensity" exists between the band of intense red luminosity caused by soft electron precipitation and the region of hard electron precipitation toward the equator from it. The daytime pulsating aurorae are recorded in the region of the "gap in luminous intensity" and can be divided into two types. Pulsations of the first type are recorded as quasi-periodic irregular increases in intensity and are coupled with the formation of short-lived diffuse bands of width 50 - 150 km. Pulsations of the second type are formed with a quasi-periodic (T = 2 - 5 minutes) expansion toward the pole of the zone of hard precipitation, the poleward boundary of which undergoes higher-frequency variations recorded as pulsating aurorae with modulated amplitude.
