A superposed epoch analysis, using f min, 30-mb temperatures and Kp data, shows that significant stratospheric-ionospheric coupling occurred during the winters of 1969-71, 1972-74; it appears that such events, associated with planetary waves, are not uncommon in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also shown that magnetic activity was directly, or indirectly, involved in determining the magnitude of that ionospheric response.
